Circular Open Grid (Skinner #NYFM 60-1) fine strike in red ties 10 green, type V (35), pos. 73R2, curl in "T" of "Cents", additionally tied by "New York Nov 12" Ocean Mail c.d.s. (NYOM 54-1), on clean circa 1860 yellow cover to San Francisco, Cal. at the 10 rate, Very Fine and unusual. Ex-Skinner, Richards. [Item #009077]

This letter was first directed to the N.Y. Foreign Mail division and cancelled by the red grid, then properly handled by the Domestic Division who cancelled with Ocean Mail datestamp.

Circular Geometric (Skinner-Eno #GE-C unlisted) fine strike duplexed with "New-York, Dec 6, 1862" cds ties 3c rose (65), faults, on orange cover to Romulusville, N.Y., handstamped Miller & Carpenter produce merchant corner card, original part-printed circular enclosure; reduced slightly at left, Fine. This cancel is similar to GE-C15, but this is clearly a cross roads type.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS UNUSUAL UNLISTED NYFM SEVEN-SECTION GRID CANCEL. This cancel is unlisted by Kirke and Weiss. The Richards collection sold at Bennett contained the other two examples of this cancel dated Nov. 15th and Nov. 16th 1870 (lots 1291 & 1292). Richards believed these were TR-G12, but they are not. See "Trying To Clear up a Two Decade Question" by Dan Richards, U.S. Cancellation Club News, February 2010, p. 13-14, fig. 2.
