ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS UNUSUAL UNLISTED NYFM SEVEN-SECTION GRID CANCEL. This cancel is unlisted by Kirke and Weiss. The Richards collection sold at Bennett contained the other two examples of this cancel dated Nov. 15th and Nov. 16th 1870 (lots 1291 & 1292). Richards believed these were TR-G12, but they are not. See "Trying To Clear up a Two Decade Question" by Dan Richards, U.S. Cancellation Club News, February 2010, p. 13-14, fig. 2.

Grid (Weiss #TR-G36) perfect bold strike ties 10c brown (150), well centered, on 1872 folded cover to Bordeaux, France at the 10c direct mail rate, red "New York 'Paid 6' Feb 17" exchange cds, carried on the Cunard Line Batavia, London (3.11) and Calais (3.11) transits, Bordeaux (3.11) arrival backstamp, a Very Fine use with a superb strike. This cancel is normally found duplexed with black New York dispatch cds on mails to Central and South America.
